The Bible in Basic English (BBE) is a translation of the Bible created to make the scriptures accessible to readers with limited knowledge of English. It was translated by Samuel Henry Hooke and published in 1949. The translation is based on the idea of using a restricted vocabulary—about 1,000 commonly understood words—to express the meaning of the original Hebrew and Greek texts. By limiting the vocabulary and simplifying sentence structures, it aims to present biblical teachings in a form that is approachable for a wide audience.
